Xinhua and Chinese military media reported on 30 October that the GJ-21, a ship-borne stealth reconnaissance-and-strike drone, had completed its first take-off and landing on the Sichuan, lead ship of the Type 076 amphibious assault class. The ship carries an electromagnetic catapult and arresting gear, so the claim would mark the start of fixed-wing drone operations from an amphibious platform. The date and footage were withheld, and no independent confirmation exists.

What state media said, and what is missing

The China Military Bugle release described the GJ-21 as the "first ship-borne stealth reconnaissance and attack drone" and said it "recently" made its first successful take-off and landing on the Sichuan. It noted that the ship incorporates electromagnetic catapult-assisted take-off and arrested-landing technology, while avoiding an explicit statement that the catapult was used for this flight. Reuters reported that Xinhua hailed the event as a "breakthrough" for the amphibious assault ship programme, and CCTV said the ship conducted consecutive sea trials in late October.

The release gives no date, sea area, photograph or video. What open sources had confirmed so far were electromagnetic-catapult sled tests, a mock-up on the flight deck and flight footage filmed near Huludao in Liaoning. The confirmable fact at this point is therefore that China announced a success; the timing, number of cycles and outcome of the arrested landing remain the claimant's assertions.

Turning an amphibious assault ship into a drone carrier

The Type 076 is reported to displace about 40,000 tonnes at full load and is designed to operate fixed-wing drones alongside helicopters and landing craft. Commentators quoted by the Global Times, including Zhang Xuefeng and Song Zongping, called it a "global first" for launching and recovering a stealth attack drone from an amphibious assault ship. US precedents, including ship-borne drone trials in 1943 and 1992 and the X-47B's carrier landings in 2013, mean the "first" should be read as a claim limited to the ship type.

The GJ-21's combat radius, weapons load and sortie rate remain undisclosed. No official text describes autonomous landing or autonomous target selection, and the reference to "autonomous carrier landings" circulating on social media comes from unofficial sources. As an implementation milestone, the announcement shows physical compatibility between ship and airframe; swarm control and manned-unmanned teaming belong to a later stage.

Implications for unmanned air power in the Western Pacific

If the Sichuan enters service as a drone carrier, China could project unmanned air power around the first island chain without relying on its aircraft carriers. The announcement came a day after the Ministry of National Defense criticised Japan's mass production of unmanned systems, tying the display of drone capability to the regional arms competition. The end of sea trials and the commissioning date, GJ-21 production and unit assignment, and what is shown at the 16th Zhuhai Airshow will indicate how much substance lies behind the announcement.
