KCNA reported on 30 October that Kim Jong Un toured the "Unmanned Aviation Technology Development-2026" exhibition at Kalma, Wonsan, on 29 October and called the pursuit of "absolute superiority" in drones an inevitable choice dictated by the changing nature of modern warfare. He placed the improvement of key technologies, including the integration of artificial intelligence into unmanned weapon systems, at the top of the agenda, and the event showcased strikes by suicide drones and cruise missiles on island targets and the first firing of a 600 mm multiple rocket launcher. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the same day they had detected about a dozen ballistic missiles fired from the Wonsan area some 250 km into the East Sea.

AI and unmanned aviation as priorities alongside nuclear forces

According to KCNA as quoted by TASS, Kim said "the drive for absolute superiority in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles is an inevitable choice determined by the changing nature of modern warfare" and placed "top priority" on improving key technologies, including incorporating artificial intelligence into unmanned weapon systems. He called on scientists and engineers to deliver breakthroughs in unmanned aviation and military AI matching progress in nuclear and conventional forces. The statement restates his September 2025 declaration that AI drone development is a top priority; continuity rather than novelty is its main feature.

The exhibition revealed what appears to be a tailless stealth attack drone for the first time. Aviation Week described a "previously unseen" tailless stealth UCAV, and South Korean reporting described a stingray-shaped stealth airframe numbered 21030X01. The Korea Defense and Security Forum (KODEF) assessed it as a developmental aircraft intended to neutralise South Korean air defences. No performance data or actual flight has been confirmed, and nothing released allows a judgement on whether the exhibit is an operational aircraft or a mock-up.

Demonstration strikes on mock South Korean guard posts and howitzers

KCNA claimed that suicide attack drones, multipurpose drones firing air-to-surface missiles and cruise missiles struck island targets with "100 percent accuracy". South Korean press reported that the mock targets represented South Korean guard posts, outposts, K9 self-propelled howitzers and M1 Abrams tanks, and that the aircraft resembled the US Switchblade 600 and Israel's Harop and Hero. The accuracy figure is the claimant's assertion and has not been independently verified.

The same day saw the first firing of the 600 mm "Sniper" multiple rocket launcher, a salvo of 15 rounds with a stated maximum range of 240 km. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said about a dozen short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Wonsan area around midday on 29 October and flew roughly 250 km, with South Korean and US analysts examining the specifications. US Indo-Pacific Command reported "two ballistic missiles"; the discrepancy in numbers awaits clarification. Seoul's National Security Office condemned the launches as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Implications for assessing North Korea's unmanned forces

Microsoft's assessment published a day earlier judged that some North Korean threat actors have reached an "operational" stage of AI use in the cyber domain. This exhibition, by declaring the integration of AI into physical unmanned weapons a national top priority, points to the institutionalisation of AI across both cyber and weapons programmes. For Japan and South Korea, the pressure that simultaneous low-cost drone and ballistic-missile operations place on air-defence priorities is the issue to watch.
