On 26 October Germany's Helsing presented in Berlin an AI-controlled autonomous air-defence system, Contra, together with two interceptor missiles: the jet-powered AD-1 Inferno and the solid-rocket AD-2 Ambush. The company asserts that Russian output of jet-powered Geran-4/5 drones has reached 4,000 a month and promises unit prices far below existing interceptors with production of 1,000 missiles a month. Neither interceptor has completed flight testing, and deliveries would begin in the second quarter of 2027 at the earliest.

Autonomous air defence on the Altra platform, with human control retained

Contra is built on Helsing's Altra command-and-control platform and is described as fusing radar, electro-optical, infrared and acoustic sensors with effectors to detect and engage 'hundreds or thousands of drone and missile threats' simultaneously. The release states that users keep 'full control over decision making and prioritisation', and claims third-party interceptors, counter-drone lasers, guns and net systems can be integrated 'in a matter of days'. It can re-task interceptors in flight and connects to SitaWare and the German army's own battle-management software. Co-founder and president Niklas Köhler said the system delivers 'autonomous fire superiority up to ten kilometres high, affordable and at industrial scale'.

Interceptor specifications and the price promise

AD-1 Inferno is jet-powered and high subsonic (over 700 km/h), capable of loitering, swarming and repeated re-engagement; AD-2 Ambush uses a solid rocket motor to reach Mach 2.5 with a range of 20 km or more. Both are container-launched, with 20 AD-1s or 40 AD-2s per 20-foot container. Mid-course guidance comes from Contra radar ground stations and terminal guidance from an onboard radar seeker that the company says is built from commercial parts at less than a tenth of the cost of comparable seekers.

Co-founder Gundbert Scherf told reporters the unit price would be 'below EUR 100,000 apiece' and that 'when we say mass-producible, we mean 1,000 units per month'. German trade press puts existing interceptor missiles at EUR 500,000 to 4 million each, and the company says a mostly European supply chain keeps the missiles outside US export restrictions.

Breaking Defense, however, reported that the company 'did not provide hard cost estimates for the two missiles', so the price rests on verbal remarks at the briefing. Low-cost interceptor efforts by Anduril, Lockheed Martin (PAC-3 Edge) and CHAOS Industries are under way across NATO countries, and Helsing's announcement sits within that competition.

Flight testing still ahead; deliveries in 2027

What has been demonstrated is limited. Neither interceptor has finished flight testing; what Helsing showed in Berlin was a video of an AD-2 test flight, and no seeker test results have been published. AD-1 went from concept to demonstrator in two months, with first flights 'due in the coming weeks'. The company expects market readiness in the second half of 2027 and deliveries in the second quarter of 2027 at the earliest.

On customers, Scherf said one unnamed country had signed a contract for the Contra command system (Altra software), which excludes the missiles. What can be confirmed today is therefore a published design, verbal price targets and one software contract; intercept performance and mass production remain to be verified.
